That was the question put to Sam Johnson’s Washington office. Sam has been a consistent voice of conservatism in Congress, but it is good to let even your friends explain themselves when you have questions of their actions. Please leave your comments about this explanation or whether you agree with Sam’s concern about the Tea Party Caucus or not.
=====================================================
As you know, Sam is very supportive of the Tea Party movement and has attended numerous meetings across North Texas. He truly believes in limited government, fiscal responsibility and adherence to the Constitution. He is one of the original founding members of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC) in Congress and has a 98.14% lifetime rating with the American Conservative Union (ACU). Sam voted against the stimulus, the federal takeover of our health care system, the cap and trade energy tax, and each and every bailout that’s come up for a vote. Sam votes right and I think that most Tea Party members would support his voting record right down the line.
For Sam, the Tea Party movement is about cleaning up Washington. Once a caucus in Washington gets started, it all becomes political and ceases to be a grass roots movement. In his view, the Tea Party is a unique grass-roots movement across the country that is made up of like-minded people from across the political spectrum who all share a common belief that their government is broken and are demanding dramatic changes. Sam feels that the last thing this movement needs is influence from Washington.
This movement represents an uprising from the people who are unhappy with a Congress that spends too much, taxes too much and has failed to gain the consent of the governed. The Tea Party is focused on throwing out the big-spending politicians who are mortgaging the futures of our children and grandchildren. The millions of people who make up this movement will all have a great affect on the upcoming election when all Americans will be able to voice their concerns at the ballot box. The last thing the Tea Party movement needs is interference from politicians in Washington who will only politicize the movement and its goals.
In Sam’s humble opinion, this movement needs to be kept pure and involving Washington could cause ruin to a truly wonderful grass-roots effort.
I hope this summary of Sam’s thoughts on the issue is helpful. Please feel free to contact me if I can ever be of assistance. Keep up the great work educating and empowering folks in North Texas. Its people like you who embody the most galvanizing force in this nation: “We the people.”
Best regards,
Dave Heil

U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson (TX)

I agree with Sam. The hair on the back of my neck stood up when I heard about it. I personally don’t want the Republicans or any government entity to hijack the TEA Party.
A fair explanation, I think. We definitely shouldn’t dwell on his decision. Too many other more important things we need to focus on between now and November…
Drain the Swamp 2010!!

Here’s a pretty good writeup that expresses some similar concerns:
