Organizing For America vs. Tea Parties at Ted Cruz’s Office

April 21, 2013

Obama’s actual campaign organization did no better than MoveOn.org years ago. Word got out that OFA was planning to protest at Ted Cruz’s office so a counter-protest was quietly put together by Katrina Pierson. again, the Tea Parties swamped them 75 to 25 – even without making an all-hands call.  It took MoveOn.org about a dozen attempts to finally realize we are going to normally outnumber them by an embarrassing amount.  How long before OFA learns the same lesson and throws in the towel? Some media brought in a large camera (weren’t sure who) but they were pretty selective in what they shot, naturally.  They didn’t seem interested in many interviews.

Campus Carry & Open Carry Stuck in Committee: Texas House ‘Leadership’ Playing Games

April 8, 2013

UPDATE: A watered-down version of House Bill 972 was passed out of committee.  We’ll link to the current version of the bill when its available online.  It’s sad to think a lunatic running around a campus stabbing everyone may have finally gotten some commons sense applied to this.

Here’s what it comes down to: several 2nd Amendment rights bills got positive hearings in the Texas House Committee for Homeland Security and the committee itself is in favor of them (probably 7-2).  The problem is, the Texas House ‘leadership’ is ‘gaming’ these bills; either holding them as a favor to the minority Democrats, or- as likely- using them to arm-twist conservatives to vote on things they otherwise wouldn’t.
It is time to apply heat from outside Austin to support these bills coming out of committee and for Calendars to put them up for a vote BEFORE the end-of-session scrum.  Our right to defend ourselves should NOT be subject to such shenanigans.

House Bill 972 , House Bill 1313, and House Bill 706 by Rep. Allen Fletcher, Rep. Brandon Creighton & Rep. Giovanni Capriglione, respectively, would allow adult Concealed Handgun Licensees to protect themselves in buildings and facilities located on the campus of a public college or university. Open Carry, which allows a CHL holder to either conceal or carry openly a handgun, is House Bill 700 by Rep. Lavender.
Also, House Bill 1304 by Rep. Sheets, which decriminalizes the unintentional display of a concealed firearm by a CHL holder, is also worthy of a vote.

Here are the board members and Straus’s own contact infromation.  Concentrate on contacting (by phone if possible) the offices of the Committee Chair Pickett and Straus himself.  Be sure to share this information with like-minded folks, either by email or the social media share links shown above.

Speaker: Rep. Joe Straus (512) 463-1000

Chair: Rep. Joseph Pickett  (512) 463-0596

Vice Chair: Rep. Allen Fletcher  (512) 463-0661
Members:
- Rep. Philip Cortez  (512) 463-0269
- Rep. Tony Dale  (512) 463-0696
- Rep. Dan Flynn  (512) 463-0880
- Rep. Tim Kleinschmidt  (512) 463-0682
- Rep. George Lavender  (512) 463-0692
- Rep. Kenneth Sheets  (512) 463-0244
- Rep. Ron Simmons  (512) 463-0478

The issue here can be couched in the term of protection of women.  Statistics indicate that between one in four and one in five women suffer sexual assault on campus. With campuses being gun-free zones, the perps have a LOT fewer limitations on activity. We need to support women’s right to protect themselves as they see fit.

State GOP Reps who are Conservative ‘Posers’

April 5, 2013

We believe in a “3 strikes, you are out!” rule.  Below are lists of Texas State GOP Representatives who voted against the conservative position in budget amendments yesterday (there WAS some confusion on the first one on what they were voting for; but remember, it’s THREE strikes). If your GOP representative is on ANY of these 3 lists, you might want to ask them politely why.  But if they are on all three, don’t bother; just consider working on getting yourself a new representative.  (Caution; we tried to screen out the Dems; may have missed one or two.)

Status of the Texas Legislative Session – 1

March 19, 2013

First off, there is much reason to be proud of our contingent of new ‘fire-breathers’ that Collin, Denton, and Tarrant counties sent down to Austin this term.

Again, attempts were made to change the ‘way things are’ in Austin with the Speaker and his Committee Chairs controlling and wheeling-dealing everything to their personal ends.  When it was obvious the votes were not there to unseat the Speaker, the fight went to the actual house rules involved to see if things like having 76 so-signers on a bill could get it to automatically get a floor vote, bypassing committee ‘gatekeeping’ (and favor-buying).  The test vote before this item was taken up garnered only 25 votes: disappointing, but still an improvement in the 15 ‘rebels’ we had last time.  So the number of those that want change keeps growing.

Kudos for Reps. like Giovanni Capriglione for his transparency legislation to publicly declare when legislators might have personal financial conflicts of interest: he was initially ridiculed for the effort, but has since worked hard to garner support for the main aspects of it.

SPECIAL kudos to Rep. Ron Simmons, who has perfect attendance at the Appropriation committee meetings- as a SPECTATOR (he is NOT on the committee), serving as a taxpayer watchdog!

Also, kudos for Jeff Leach, for his co-sponsorship and work on campus carry legislation.  The campus carry/open carry legislation got favorable committee assignment and hearing and SHOULD come out of committee soon.

Special CONDEMNATION goes to State Sen. Jane Nelson, who is working overtime with special hospital interests to force Texas to take the Medicaid expansion, which would stick us with MASSIVE new bills after 3 years.  With so-called ‘Republicans’ like this, who needs Democrats?

Other bad news is that all state-level immigration legislation has- once again- been dumped into Rep. Byron Cook’s do-nothing State Affairs committee, where legislation is sent to die, apparently.  That includes even something as simple of E-Verify for state contracts, which you’d think would be a slam dunk to assure state tax money is not spent hiring illegal labor.  We will see if this committee does any better, but it is doubtful.

The state budget is in far better shape because of major improvements in oil and gas revenues.  Some of the education ‘cuts’ (much of which was really non-continuance of programs funded by the temporary stimulus) have been restored. The MACRO-budget will balance, leaving much of the Rainy Day fund alone, although some of that ‘balance’ is due to accounting sleights of hand of applying surpluses of dedicated funds to cover shortages in things NOT in the dedicated fund’s sphere.  A continuing trend that should stop.

The big fight will be on Medicaid expansion.  Democrats, big hospitals, and a handful of moderate Republicans- including Joe Straus want it.  The moderate Republicans say they only want it as a state block grant that they can control without DC strings, On the surface, Washington my agree to it, but it would only be for show- DC NEVER releases control.,  And large number of people added under the program would become the STATE’s financial headache 3 years from now. (BTW: a number of studies show that Medicaid medical outcomes are generally worse than even UNINSURED outcomes; the worst healthcare money can buy.)

The Obamacare Disaster is Upon Us

March 13, 2013

WE WARNED YOU!
It is time to start maintaining a running list of just how many ways Obamacare is going to damage healthcare, the economy and your families as it attempts implementation at the end of this year. This will be cataclysmic- and a shock to the vast majority who have NOT been paying attention, so hold on, folks!  This will be updated regularly, so keep checking back.

Fighting for the 2nd Amendment

Texas House Committee to Hold Public Hearings on NRA-Backed Campus Carry and Open Carry Bills this Week in Austin. The membership is below.  These bills need to get through this committee and should with enough support.
The Texas House Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety will hold public hearings on the NRA-supported measures listed below this Thursday, March 14, in Room E2.010 of the Capitol Extension in Austin. This committee normally meets at 8:00 am, but with their full agenda, it is the intention of the chairman to take testimony on the firearm-related measures after the House adjourns from its floor session early in the afternoon. Please contact committee members and urge them to support these important pro-Second Amendment bills.
House Bill 972 , House Bill 1313, and House Bill 706 by Rep. Allen Fletcher (R-Cypress), Rep. Brandon Creighton (R-Conroe) & Rep. Here are the board members.  Concentrate on contacting (by phone if possible) the offices marked in bold.  This is a SOLID republican group, so they just primarily need to here support, because you KNOW they’ll be hearing from the gun-grabbers.
